This is one of the first poems I ever wrote in primary school.
I was in year 5 and we were asked to write about an ‘Animile’ – a made up creature. This one fell out of nowhere and for some reason these words have etched their way into my memory some four decades later.
Amooshka Aliooshka has a funny old nose
She has funny old feet
And funny old toes
Whenever she tries to give a great smile
Her nose goes ‘ka-plonk’
And she falls in a pile
She goes hippety-clonk right down the main street
With warts on her fingers
and moles on her feet
Every morning at dawn she gets up with a yawn
To play with her children
Upon the soft lawn
Every night after dinner when all have been fed
She kisses their cheeks
And sends them to bed
So you see Amooshka Aliooshka is a nice Animile
And she’s always say hello
With a jolly big smi…. ‘ka-plonk!!!'
